A History of Democracy in Chile: 1973

Estimated reading time: 27 seconds

The last chapter of A history of democracy in Chilebroadcast by Radio Cordón Marga Marga and led by CIPPSAL professor and academic director, Juan Carlos Gómez Leyton, focused on the process of destroying democracy by major groups, both national and international. These, through the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement, overthrew the popular, socialist and revolutionary government of the Popular Unity in 1973.

The Armed Forces militarily occupied the national territory, causing popular genocide. In addition, they began to restructure capitalism, imposing a new form of collectivity, a new type of State and a new political system: “protected democracy”, which was in place from 1990 onwards. This political form will be the subject of the last chapter.
