A Historical Journey: The Church of St. Joseph the Bridegroom Reistenhausen and Its Furnishing, Renovations, and Past Pastors

Background: Church of St. Joseph the Bridegroom Reistenhausen

Furnishing: At the church consecration in August 1923, the church looked a bit bare and empty. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the founder of the church, Joseph Schmitt, it was possible in the inflationary period that followed to design the interior of the church in a dignified manner and to gradually add to it. In November 1923, a sandstone pulpit was erected in the shape of a wine goblet, which was later artistically embellished by the stone sculptors Franz Motzel, Joseph Mayer and Ernst Wild with bas-reliefs of the four evangelists. In addition, three new bells for the tower were added in 1924 (replaced in 1955 after being lost in World War II), 1925 the Baroque-style Stations of the Cross images, 1927 the installation of the high altar showing the Holy Trinity and Mary and Joseph, as well as the large brass chandelier, 1928 the Construction of the two side altars, 1931 the redesign of the round St. George window as a reminder of the First World War, 1952 the installation of a new organ and 1966 the baptismal font made of sandstone (probably from the old parish church of Faulbach).

Renovations: Repainting of the interior of the church – removal of the old paintings in the chancel arch (1956); Renovation of the heating system with installation of an oil heater (1965); Reconstruction of the large church staircase in the sanctuary, restoration of the front facade, renewal of the windows with double glazing, acquisition of the “people’s altar” with ambo and sedilia (1972); Complete renovation of the roof and tower (1986), interior renovation of the church with new interior plastering and restoration of the altars (1987/88).

Pastor: Peter Wolbert (1894-1901), Franz Seraph Nimis (1901-1906), Georg Schmitt (1906-1909), Ludwig Hettinger (1909-1916), Anton Ehing (1916-1920), Josef Kraft (1920 -1927), Anton Vorndran (1928-1934), Karl Öchsner (1935-1942), Ludwig Weiss (1942-1949), Josef Bretz (1949-1955), Paul Schneider (1959-1962). In 1962 the independent pastorate of Reistenhausen was dissolved and converted into a curate of the Fechenbach parish. Since then, pastors Paul Schneider (1962-1972), Hans Döll (1972-1995), Ernst Scheckenbach (1996-2008), Nikolaus Stanek (2008-2014, parish community of St. Nikolaus, Dorfprozelten), Günther Munz (2015-2021 ) and Bernd Winter (since 2022).
