A historical find in a magical resort of ours! – 2024-10-04 18:52:35

A find about the history surrounding the most beloved beloved resort town in our country!

Bulgarian scientists discovered the second ancient port of Sozopol. The find is part of the first underwater expedition of the National History Museum in the water area of the Chrysosotira peninsula, which proves the initial doubts of the archaeologists.

In the depths near today’s Chernomorets, in the bay near the Chrysosotira peninsula, an underwater archaeological expedition of the National History Museum was held under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ivan Hristov. The port area of the late antique fortress “Chrysosotira” has been studied for ten years.

“Perhaps we have come across the second Sozopol Apollonian port. The truth is that this hypothesis is supported by the written sources, however limited and fragmentary they may be,” he pointed out.

Prof. Hristov points out that the port is mentioned in the partially preserved anonymous Byzantine manuscript from the 6th century, where it is said that the former Apollonia Pontica/Magna had two large ports. Count Tolstoy also spoke about another port area in the 18th century. It is certain that here in ancient times there was rich commercial activity by sea here, thousands of ships passed the Bosphorus and docked on the Bulgarian shores.

“Even in the middle of the 6th century, Emperor Justinian the Great created an administrative unit – Festura Ezerciatitus, whose capital was Odessos. So there must be strongholds and garrisons along the coast that would receive supplies of food products and not only wine in general, etc., which would feed the Byzantine garrisons along the Danube and along the coast,” stated Prof. Hristov.

The Center for Underwater Archeology in Sozopol also participates with specialized equipment on site, as underwater work is significantly more difficult in the dark depths covered with sea grass. Among the dozens of acres on the bottom they finally found numerous amphorae evidence of the port.

Along the Bulgarian coast, there are still dozens of shipwrecks that continue to attract treasure hunters and that have not yet been explored by archaeologists. Many of the divers have specialized equipment and can go to greater depths.

In the month of December, the National History Museum will present the most interesting artifacts from the underwater expedition.
