Yesterday, nearly 200 countries participating in COP28 reached an agreement described as historic, signifying a decisive step forward in achieving the objectives pursued to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They are talking for the first time about an exit from fossil fuels. The discussions were particularly heated between the nations producing these energies, in particular those which produce oil or coal and the others, but the main thing was this consensus found, making it possible to consider limiting the global temperature to 1, 5°celsius at the end of this century. The effects of the decisions taken will not be immediate, but the will shown by all the countries present at COP28 is confirmed and no turning back is possible.
A historic agreement reached at COP28
The most important terms of the agreement concluded are “ exit from all fossil fuels “. The countries present are determined to “ transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a fair, orderly and equitable manner, by accelerating action in this crucial decade, in order to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050 in accordance with scientific recommendations “. Tensions were high between the countries producing these fossil fuels and the others, but the general interest ended up taking precedence. The former remained clinging to their economic model dependent on these energies. However, the objective is not quantified and no date is mentioned. The second point of this agreement gives a guarantee to developing countries with the creation of a fund “ loss and damage » allowing them to be compensated while they are on the front line of global warming. The agreement also recommends tripling the production of renewable energies by 2030. It also highlights the importance of nuclear energy, the use of which is already well advanced in countries like France. This agreement is described as historic, but the question is whether it will really be applied. The interests of Humanity are at stake.
