The Kumbh Mela festival usually lasts for three months and attracts millions of believers from India and around the world. However, due to the new coronavirus pandemic, this time the festival lasts only 30 days.
Nearly 11.6 million cases of Covid-19 have been reported in India, and authorities have warned that the virus has recently spread more rapidly. Restrictions on freedom of movement are imposed in several states.
However, concerns about the spread of Covid-19 have not deterred pilgrims from attending the festivities, and most of these people are without face masks and do not respect social distancing.
The media reported that more than three million people took part in the festival one day.
In Haridwar, Uttarakhand, every day, Covid-19 is unveiled to about 40 festival participants, the Indian Ministry of Health reported, worried about a major outbreak of the virus.
The virus has broken out in more than 12 states in recent weeks, the ministry said, adding that some of the pilgrims may have come from those states.
Approximately 50,000 rapid antigen tests and 5,000 RT-PCR tests are performed daily during the festivities, but the ministry said testing should be expanded, especially in areas where the virus is likely to spread rapidly.
