Although a high protein diet helps build muscle mass in many cases, this does not apply to critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Increased protein supply in critically ill patients also results in delayed discharge and lower quality of life after ICU admission. This is evident from a scientific study at five hospitals in Belgium and as many Dutch hospitals, published in the medical journal The Lancet.
