“A healthy child under 12 doesn’t need a corona shot”

Since December 2021, all children aged 5 to 11 have been offered a corona injection. At the time, the Health Board thought it was a good idea because a vaccine can protect against MIS-C. Children who become infected with corona for the first time are at risk of this rare but serious condition.

But the vast majority of children have suffered a corona infection, according to the council. MIS-C hardly occurs in a second or subsequent infection and the risk of the disease is lower even with the omikron variant of the virus, which now causes nearly all infections. All in all, according to the Department of Health, the usefulness of vaccination in children of this age group is “limited”.

Sometimes it benefits from a hit

Children with, for example, a heart condition, an immune disorder, a lung condition, diabetes or obesity benefit from a coronary shot. They are more vulnerable and vaccination “can reduce the risk of hospitalization”. The Council had previously advised that younger children should only receive a crown injection if they belong to a risk group.

The new advice also applies to repeated injection. According to the advice, children who have already received their first corona injections should only be asked to be vaccinated again if they belong to a risk group. (AP)
