A large fire of dry grass and bushes broke out yesterday in a wooded area in the area of Sredets municipality, between the villages of Slivovo and Valchanovo. There was a strong wind, which caused the flames to cover a large area very quickly.
The first arriving fire department team requested additional assistance and 8 teams were dispatched to the scene, followed by two more from the Forest Service with fire trucks.
“The fire spread over an area of 8,000 acres. There were also two water carriers of the municipality and over 10 employees of Municipal Forestry – Sredets. The fire has been contained but not extinguished. There was a direct danger to the village of Slivovo, as the flames were literally stopped in the first yards of the village. The wind today may cause isolated outbreaks and there are now 5 fire crews on site” said the head of RDPBZN-Burgas senior commissar Nikolay Nikolaev.
He also clarified that at this moment there is no direct danger to the populated areas.
However, water supply during extinguishing became difficult because there was no water in the hydrants in the villages and water was taken from a dam nearby.
The municipality of Sredets is the most critical for the fiery elements this summer in the Burgas region. Yesterday’s fire is also the largest in area this summer for RDPBZN-Burgas.
