The largest fuel pipeline system in the United States has been hit by a hacker attack and has still not been able to fully recover, the system operator Colonial Pipeline Company said.
The attack took place three days ago.
The company supplies gasoline and aviation fuel from the Gulf of Texas via an 8,850-kilometer pipeline to the East Coast, serving 50 million customers.
The Colonial Pipeline indicates that it was affected by a hacker attack that blocked computer systems by demanding a ransom.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said on Monday that the attack was carried out by the group “Darkside”.
“We continue to work with the company and our government partners in the investigation,” the FBI said in a statement.
Colonial Pipeline is the largest pipeline operator in the United States, typically transporting 2.5 million barrels of gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and other refined petroleum products per day.
