Six people were killed in a shooting at a Walmart supermarket in Chesapeake, Virginia, the U.S. municipality said Wednesday, noting that the suspected shooter was also killed.
“Chesapeake Police confirm seven victims, including the shooter, from last night’s shooting at Walmart on Sam’s Circle,” he wrote in a tweet.
The gunman, believed to be the manager of the store, shot some of his employees and then committed suicide.
Details are still few, but a police officer spoke of deaths and several injuries, while the motive for the crime is still unknown.
Police told reporters the attack occurred at 10.12pm local time and the suspect acted alone.
Wal-Mart said it was “shocked by this tragic event” and was “working closely with the police.”
A further statement from the Chesapeake Police is expected to reveal more information Wednesday morning.
Images on social media showed a heavy police presence at the scene, and footage posted online showed an eyewitness – dressed in Walmart – describing what happened.
Witness said he left a staff room, then manager walked in and fired.
The man added: “Unfortunately we have lost some of our colleagues”, explaining that he does not know how many of his colleagues have been killed.
Local broadcaster ‘Wafi TV’ quoted a spokesman for the hospital, ‘Sentara Norfolk’ as saying five people were being treated there.
A woman told the station that her brother, a 20-year-old shop employee, was shot just 10 minutes after entering his workplace, but he managed to reassure his relatives via text messages. text.
A woman named Gwetta Jeffrey told CNN that her mother was inside the building when the attack occurred and was able to send text messages to reassure her family.
He added that his mother was unhurt but was in shock.
Mark Warner, the Democratic governor of Virginia, tweeted that he was “disgusted by reports of another mass shooting.”
Assistant Senator Virginia L. Louise Lucas, also a Democrat, said her “heart is broken.”
“I will not stop until we find solutions to end the epidemic of gun violence in our country,” he wrote on Twitter.
Tuesday night’s attack comes days after a gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in the US state of Colorado, killing five and wounding 17 others.
