A guide to mechanisms for reporting and dealing with violations of children’s rights

ALGIERS- The National Delegate for the Promotion and Protection of Childhood and President of the National Body for the Promotion and Protection of Children (ONPPE), Meriem Cherfi reported, Saturday in Algiers, of ” preparations for the development of a guide on mechanisms for reporting and addressing violations of children’s rights.

In a press statement on the sidelines of a meeting organized by the ONPPE in celebration of the ratification by Algeria of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CIDE), Ms. Cherfi said that work is in progress for the publication of the first issue of a review which highlights the activities of the Organ since its installation and the development of a guide highlighting the mechanisms for reporting violations of children’s rights and methods of their treatment.

On this occasion, Ms. Cherfi indicated that “since last January, the Body has registered, via the toll-free number (11 11) more than 2,200 reports related to the violation of children’s rights, and has received nearly a million telephone calls for information and explanations on the Organ or to express certain concerns related to the child “.

The ONPPE takes care to facilitate the missions of all professionals and stakeholders in the protection of children’s rights and keep them informed of the latest legal developments in this area, she stressed.

The National Delegate for the Promotion and Protection of Childhood also referred to the preparation of the action plan for the 2021 financial year of the Standing Coordination Committee, noting, in this regard, several activities, in particular the scheduling of meetings, field visits and training sessions for members of the Commission on procedures relating to children’s rights and mechanisms for their protection.

Under the provisions of the Child Protection Act of July 15, 2015, the Permanent Coordination Committee under the ONPPE, chaired by the National Delegate for Child Protection, includes 16 ministries, representatives of security body and civil society and examines issues relating to children’s rights, within the framework of cooperation and consultation between the body and the various sectors and organizations.

This meeting aims to discuss the achievements made in the field of childhood, 28 years after the ratification by Algeria on December 19, 1992 on the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted on November 20, 1989. She specified, recalling that Algeria has since granted

independence, “of great importance” to the protection and promotion of children.

This meeting was an opportunity to “highlight the important steps” taken by Algeria in matters of child protection and promotion as well as the national policies and programs developed in favor of this category, added Ms. Cherfi.
