A growing number of Canadians believe that Israel is committing genocide in the Gaza Strip and that its military offensive is disproportionate, while criticizing the support that the Government of Canada provides to the Jewish state, according to a survey released this Monday .

The poll, conducted by the Angus Reid Institute from February 2 to 7 among 1,610 Canadians and with a margin of error of 2%, reveals that 41% of Canadians believe that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians, while 32% % opposes that idea. 27% are not defined.

Furthermore, the number of Canadians expressing sympathies for the Palestinians has grown since the conflict began on October 7, when Hamas militants attacked areas of Israel, killing about 1,200 people. Hamas also kidnapped more than two hundred people.

In response to the attack, Israel has invaded the Gaza Strip, killing at least 28,300 people, mostly women and children, injuring tens of thousands, and widespread destruction of Gazan infrastructure.

The Angus Reid Institute poll notes that in November, 28% of Canadians expressed support for Israel and 18% for the Palestinians. But now support for Israel has fallen to 25% of respondents, while support for the Palestinians has risen to 23%.

Furthermore, 33% express the same level of sympathy for both sides, when in November the figure was 31%.

In parallel, 50% agree or strongly agree that Israel’s response has been “too harsh”, compared to 31% who disagree.

While the Executive of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been reluctant to ask Israel for a ceasefire, the number among Canadians demanding a permanent ceasefire is increasing.

If in November the number requesting a ceasefire was 30%, now the figure has grown to 49%.

In this sense, 26% of those surveyed believe that Trudeau is supporting Israel too much, compared to 18% who believe that he is too close to the positions of the Palestinians. 20% believe that his government position is balanced.

More Canadians disagree with Trudeau’s stance of not supporting South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ): 33% believe Canada should support South Africa and 19% disagree. opposite sample. EFE
