A Group of Scientists Declare Anti-Lockdown Movement

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

A group of scientists asked the government not to limit the activities of young and healthy people during the pandemic corona virus Covid19. Scientists ask the government to give freedom to young people like before.

The request contained in the declaration argues for allowing the virus to spread in low-risk groups in the hopes of achieving ‘herd immunity’ or herd immunity.

It is hoped that the immune herd population is immune and can extinguish the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This declaration, called the Great Barrington, marks the latest heated debate between scientists who support very different approaches to the crisis.

Declaration authors, Sunetra Gupta, of the University of Oxford, Jay Bhattacharya, of Stanford University, and Martin Kulldorff, of Harvard University argue that kucitara and the response to Covid-19 has had a negative impact on public health.

Because kucitara or policies such as Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) disrupt routine care and are detrimental to mental health. The poor also bear a heavy burden as the pandemic has killed the economy.

To date, the declaration has been signed by four thousand health researchers and seven thousand medical personnel.

Many governments try to suppress the virus with kucitara until new treatments and vaccines are found. The declaration states that the elderly and people at high risk must be protected.

On the other hand, those at low risk should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal. Of course, this permit must be accompanied by health protocol measures such as hand washing and hospitalization when sick, which must be done by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold.

Unlocks Lockdown

The declaration suggested that schools and universities be opened to face-to-face teaching and learning. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should also be continued.

The declaration stated that the economy must continue to run. Low-risk young adults must work normally, not from home, and then restaurants and other businesses must open.

“Art, music, sports and other cultural activities must be continued. People who are more at risk can participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection afforded to those who are vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity, ”the Declaration said as it read. reported from the official site Great Barrington Declaration.

The authors acknowledge that it is more difficult to protect a large number of parents in a community, but suggest individuals can protect themselves.

“If you’re 75, you can choose to leave as little as possible. Attempts to keep infections low will only compound the problem, say the authors.

The declaration advises the government to adopt protective measures for vulnerable groups. This group should be the main focus and goal.

For example, nursing homes should use staff who have immunity and perform frequent PCR tests on staff and all visitors.

Another example is retirees living at home having to bring groceries and other essential necessities to their homes. If possible, they should meet family members outside rather than inside.

Quoting SecurityWilliam Hanage, a professor of epidemiology at Harvard said the statement appeared to have been criticized kucitara ongoing.

Research conducted by Hanage shows that Covid-19 is more deadly than flu for people in their mid-30s. The death rate increases exponentially with age, which means a large part of the population needs to be protected.

Another concern is that an uncontrolled outbreak among young and healthy people could cause many long-term medical problems, including the ‘long-term Covid’ disorder that has affected young people.

In a Twitter thread responding to the statement, Gregg Gonsalves, an epidemiologist at Yale University, said kucitara and other interventions are needed to reduce infection rates.

With nearly half of the population at risk to the health of Covid-19, he said the herd immunity strategy to exclude this vulnerable group was very strange.

Herd immunity is susceptible to a disease

The concept of herd immunity can be achieved if 70-90 percent of the population has immunity to a disease. This immunity can be achieved through disease transmission and then recovery, or vaccination.

If this number is reached, it will be difficult for the disease to be transmitted to people who do not have immunity, because the number of carriers (people who carry the virus) is very small.

Until now it is not known whether Covid-19 sufferers have long-term immunity, although several parties have advised that if this disease is left alone, group immunity will occur more quickly.

However, that scenario would be disastrous for hospitals as health workers would have a hard time dealing with the explosion of patients, and more people would die.
