The learning process in public schools in Venezuela has suffered a significant lag in recent years, which is manifested in failures in areas such as reading, writing and solving logical and mathematical problems.
This problem has been aggravated by the pandemic and the humanitarian crisis that the country is going through. In addition, many teachers have emigrated and those who remain must do other activities to survive due to low salaries.
An investigation carried out by the civil association which revealed that 63% of the third grade students have a reading fluency below the international standard, in addition, 3.9% of the students were not able to decode any of the words from the text appropriate to their age, which implies that they have reached third grade without being literate.
Another problem is that many students must work to contribute to the maintenance of their homes, which generates absences in classes and, in some cases, dropping out of studies. On the other hand, to combat this problem, Fe y Alegría has developed a plan for recovery of learning and has launched awareness campaigns to receive contributions that improve the working conditions of teachers.
In conclusion, the lag in learning in public schools in Venezuela is a crisis that must be urgently addressed. It is necessary to take measures to improve the working conditions of teachers, promote education and seek solutions so that students can have access to a quality education.
