a good vintage in July

The new home market is finally returning to demand as evidenced by the latest statistics which show 14,377 new registrations in July, a volume up 10% compared to the same month in 2019. Some brands stand out from the crowd. image of Opel beating its historic record in Morocco.

After an “average” month of June (9,651 sales) and at the end of which the market still showed a strong decline (-43.3%), sales of new cars finally started to rise again in July, as shown by the figures for Aivam (Association of importers of assembled motor vehicles). Surprise: the latter is even 10% higher than in July 2019, with 14,377 units sold, including passenger cars (PCs) and light commercial vehicles (LCV).

This is proof that many Moroccans were waiting for the promotional offers of the summer and that they took advantage of them. It is also probable that a good part of them hastened to “take out” their new car on the occasion of Eid. Another explanation is the good figures for the utility segment, thanks to a return to demand for minibuses and vans, but also to the performance of the DFSK brand (Auto Hall Group) which retains its status as the leader in LCVs with more than 1,354 registrations. at the end of July.

As for passenger cars, it is always and not surprisingly the Dacia-Renault duo which dominates in the standings, but with a market share (PDM) which is crumbling since it is now only 41.5% in sliding annual (against 43% at the end of June), after having deteriorated considerably in the isolated month of July (36.4%). What did the Franco-Romanian duo miss? Nothing, since its July sales remain high. In fact, the 4 or 5 lost PDM points (by Dacia) can be explained by the rise in power of other brands such as Skoda, Kia and especially Opel.

Third in the standings, Hyundai has had a good month and maintains a good PDM around 7%, like its challenger, Peugeot (4th) which benefits from a more balanced sales mix than the Korean. Closing the top-5, Volkswagen posted its best month of the year, with 983 vehicles sold, including 80 LCV, segment where it posted the strongest growth (+ 154%) thanks to the growing success of the Caddy-Crafter duo.

In the second half of the top-10, Citroën (6th), Fiat (7th), then Opel respectively arrive, which surprises and leads Ford (9th) in 8th place, after having signed a record monthly volume of 750 sales! Driven by the success of its SUVs, but also of the new Corsa, Opel is the only brand in the top-10 to progress with even an increase of 23% at the end of July and a PDM close to 4%! Apart from this great highlight and an ordinary commercial performance for Toyota (10th), the month of July also saw that the premium car market is doing very well. Still dominated by Mercedes-Benz, this segment saw some labels outperform in July, such as BMW (277 sales), Audi (223), Land Rover (183) and especially Porsche (39).
