The city of Dormagen has invested more than two million euros in the digitization of schools in the past twelve months. The investments were also made possible by making use of the state funding programs “Gute Schule 2020” and “DigitalPakt Schule NRW”.

Mayor Erik Lierenfeld is pleased that the maximum amount of funding has been used in full. “We topped up this money with our own resources and, above all, invested it in a new and powerful IT infrastructure,” explains the mayor.

In addition to the nationwide connection of the schools to the fiber optic network, the required hardware was also procured: a total of 370 digital boards, 111 video conference systems for classrooms, 70 iPads for teachers and over 2000 iPads for students will be distributed to all schools in Dormagen by spring 2021. “These devices are of course in demand everywhere, especially for remote learning and working. That is why the schools are gradually being equipped with it, ”says Wolfgang Zimmer, head of the IT department at the city of Dormagen.

Social imbalances are taken into account in the distribution: “Schoolchildren whose parents do not have any devices available receive the devices for free use at home too,” promises Lierenfeld.

In addition to the IT and digitization department, the school administration and the Dormagen company are also involved in the largest digitization project in recent years. Lierenfeld: “My thanks go to all my colleagues for the quick implementation. However, the current corona pandemic shows that we will need further investments in this area in the future. “

In an online survey, in which all local schools took part, some significant deficits came to light. According to First Alderman Robert Krumbein, it turned out that the educational institutions are set up very differently when it comes to digitization. This affects the work of teachers and students in the corona-related time of homeschooling.
