The World Council for Forests (Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)) begins its annual information campaign, which traditionally takes place at the end of September. This year’s campaign will take place from 21-27 September under the theme “The small steps we take together create the big change for everyone”.
One of the main goals of the campaign is to inform consumers about the possibility to consciously contribute to the protection of forests through their everyday small choices when they shop. The sign of FSC is on many labels and wood products on the Bulgarian market, but relatively few consumers in Bulgaria know what is behind this symbol. In fact, FSC gives us more certainty that the product we buy comes from a forest and production that is certified for responsible management.
In Bulgaria, a significant part of the forests are already certified according to the system of FSC, which is a reason to be less skeptical about the future of the Bulgarian forest. Over 400 Bulgarian companies for processing and trading forest products have also voluntarily chosen to be certified under this system, which shows the assumed responsibility of a significant part of the business.
FSC unites and enjoys the trust of both business and many organizations from the environmental and social sectors, both globally and in our country. In Bulgaria e.gathe noble organizations and companies that support the principles and criteria of FSC officially merged into the Sustainable Forests Association in 2024.
The Sustainable Forests Association was officially established this year, but the work on forest certification to the standards of FSC it dates from much earlier. For 10 years in Bulgaria, there has been a working group of experts working to adapt the standards of FSC for local conditions. The efficiency and professionalism of the Bulgarian experts is also something to be proud of. One of the good news since the beginning of September is that Bulgaria has the first approved updated FSC standard in the world. This means that the principles and criteria by which the voluntarily certified farms in Bulgaria are checked meet the most up-to-date requirements of the general international standard of FSC for forest management.
