A glass of wine after work is good for the brain, say researchers

A study by researchers at the School of Medicine in Rochester, New York, reveals that alcohol can reduce brain inflammation and help eliminate toxins, especially those related to serious diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports and focuses on the lymphatic system, which transports waste material out of the brain, informs CNBC.

In the research, mice were used, which were exposed to low levels of alcohol – the equivalent of two glasses of wine consumed by humans. They showed reduced brain inflammation and a more efficient process of “purifying” the residual material, compared to mice that were not given alcohol.

“Studies show that alcohol, in moderate amounts, is associated with a lower risk of dementia, while people who drink a lot of alcohol have an increased risk of cognitive decline,” says Maiken Nedergaard, author of the research.

“Specifically, low doses of alcohol improve the condition of the brain in general,” says Nedergaard.

This study is not the first to reveal the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption.

Research published last year shows that alcohol can also reduce the risk of mortality from several causes, including that caused by cardiovascular disease.

Alcohol consumption is also associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, such as stroke, heart attack or heart failure.

However, researchers do not recommend excessive alcohol consumption just to ensure certain health benefits. They advise us to consume alcohol in small quantities, ie 1-2 alcoholic drinks per day for men and one drink for women.

Excessive consumption can increase the risk of health problems, such as high blood pressure, obesity, stroke and breast cancer.
