A getaway to the heart of Montana

If you want a novel whose story, relentless, is really difficult to forget, well here it is!

Long ago, the Newmans owned ranch and land near Delphia, Montana. But today, only 24-year-old Wendell Newman remains sordid mobile home parked in the depths of the Bull Mountains. Even if it is far from being the ideal place to raise children, a social worker will come one day to carry one: the bastard son of a toxic addict who has just been sent to prison. Suddenly, Wendell to take care of it. A great challenge, little Rowdy, 7 years old, does not speak and is seriously delayed in development. Never mind! From the moment this shy and skeletal kid arrives in his life, Wendell will really do everything in his power to make things go well between them.

Black past

A nice learning novel? Not quite. For that, it would have had to happen in another family and elsewhere than in Montana, where the first legal wolf hunt in the history of this corner of the country is being prepared.

Because of her father, who had to go into hiding in the Bull Mountains many years earlier, Wendell inherited a history of violence. A past he thought he had left behind for a long time, but which, with the imminent opening of the wolf hunt, will eventually come back to him in the face like a boomerang. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to dodge the blow in time so that he can continue to protect Rowdy from human stupidity …

A hard, but magnificent story.

At 88, John le Carré signs his 25e novel. And for those who wonder, it is really very good. Why ? Because Nat, his hero, manages with disarming ease to intrigue us and to capture all our attention.

Like most of the characters created by Le Carré, Nat has worked for the British Secret Intelligence Service for quite a while. And while he expects to be scrapped shortly, he will instead be offered to run the Refuge. What could have been a nice assignment, if most of the members of this substation in the Russian department had not been so stuffy …

The powder fire

Outside of work – and that’s where it’ll get interesting! -, Nat mainly frequents the badminton courts of the Athleticus Club of Battersea. He is even the main champion and one fine day, a badist by the name of Ed Shannon will make a stand against him. For a few months, they will get into the habit of competing every Monday, and the loser will then pay the first beer. This is how, over time, Nat will learn a lot of little things about Ed. His passion for geopolitics, for example, or his strong opinions on Trump and Brexit. Small things a priori without much interest, but which will end up seriously disrupting Nat’s job and everyday life!

The title’s Francesca disappeared some 30 years ago. When she was only 16, she simply disappeared and the people of Gullspång never saw her again. An old unresolved affair that will eventually come back to haunt Inspector Charlie Lager, who is also from this tiny Swedish town. A good classic thriller.

Jojo and his sister Kayla were mostly raised by their maternal grandparents. Leonie, their mother, uses far too many hard drugs to be able to deal with them decently. But when she learns of the upcoming release of their father, a white man who has been incarcerated at the Mississippi State Penitentiary, she will not hesitate to lug her children and her crack “dealer” so far. A poignant novel that among other things won the National Book Award.
