Retired Brigadier General Johnny Khalaf said, “The Gaza war is not a war between Hezbollah and Israel. We are always on the front with Israel, and the situation was stable. Why should I now open the front and be exposed to the Israeli response?”
In an interview via “Spotshot” within the “Point of View” program, Brigadier General Khalaf said: “The political forces and the majority of the Lebanese people demanded that Lebanon be neutralized from this war, and Hezbollah is not the one who can defend Lebanon and involve it in a war.”
He added, “I am basically against Hezbollah’s intervention in this battle because the response will be at the party level and not the state. I am a statesman who does not agree with the party responding, and if Israel attacks us, the Lebanese state should be responsible for its security.”
He continued, “I respect the sacrifices and martyrs of Hezbollah, but if I want to implement international resolutions, I must give legitimacy to the weapons present in the southern region.”
He continued, “We supported the Palestinian cause for 75 years, and we paid the highest price among all the Arab countries. We have had enough of talk about this issue. We paid martyrs for it, and the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon turned into armed military forces in camps, such as the Nahr al-Bared and Ain al-Hilweh camps.”
He stressed that “we morally support the confrontation between the Palestinians and the Israeli army, and we declare on all platforms that it is a just cause and the Palestinian people must have a state. Therefore, what is the goal of opening a breach in the south, and what is the victory that we seek?”
Khalaf concluded by saying, “If the war expands to affect Lebanon, this becomes an attack on the Lebanese state, and it must take action, and if it does not then Hezbollah can respond, and in the equation of an army, a people, and a resistance, the state and political forces must have a say in the event that the war expands.” “This is what I rule out.”
