A. Galabov and Zh. Georgiev do not expect GERB to nominate Tsetska Tsacheva for president – 2024-10-01 16:37:18

/ world today news/ Although the name of the Speaker of the National Assembly, Tsetska Tsacheva, appears as the most likely candidate of GERB for the presidency, political scientists Antonii Galabov and Zhivko Georgiev do not think that she will be the candidate of the ruling party.

There is practically no time for an opposition campaign, and if GERB’s excuse for not announcing its candidacy does not sound serious, the excuses of the opposition parties for waiting for the ruling party to nominate its candidate look even more ridiculous, said Antoniy Galabov.

The fact that the parties have not yet announced their candidacies loses the quality of the public debate. This is not a casting, a matter of liking an individual, but a political process that the parties prefer not to start, thinking that this way they will control or limit the damage, but this is not true, commented Antoniy Galabov. According to him, the earlier announcement of the candidacies would help the parties to reduce the damage to the public image of the candidates.

It is better to make any arguments against a candidate sooner rather than closer to election day. Before Mr Parvanov’s second term in office in 2006, he preferred to announce his affiliation with the DS earlier in order to minimize the damage. The logic of the election campaign and political communications indicates that the sooner the candidacy is announced, the better, said Galabov.

According to him, the internal poll in the BSP is a “mechanism for gaining time”, since the question could have been asked already in the fall of 2015.

It is obvious that the BSP is not ready for now either with a candidate or with a design of possible political support for a single left-wing candidate, he said.

It is not certain that the second candidate in the runoff will be that of the BSP, stated Galabov, who also admitted one from a national-populist project. He is of the opinion that the Reform Bloc is also not ready to present a single candidate.

I believe that the Civic Council will nominate a candidate. Whether this candidate will be recognized by the other parties in the Reform Bloc as a common candidate is another matter. In a sense, the Reform Bloc, as a political project, lost height and momentum by trying to break away too quickly and too crudely from the framework of the Civic Council. The very architecture of the Reform Bloc arose largely with the authority and names of the people who entered this Civic Council, he commented.

The sociologist and political scientist Zhivko Georgiev added that the postponement of the announcement of the party’s candidacies at first sight benefits the ruling party and stated that he expects “largely formal elections”.

GERB is still strong enough to win with either at least the first round. It still has that potential, not even because it is in very good shape as a political party, but it has all the necessary resources, relatively well-oiled structures and its opponents are not in the best shape. For a second round in the ranks of GERB, there are people who would maximize the chances, but I don’t think that Tsetska Tsacheva is among them, commented Georgiev.

The expert assessed the chances of ABV and BSP issuing a common candidacy as “50 to 50”. They are hindered by many things in the past and the lack of a vision for a common future. The second could make them stronger, but for now such a vision is being sought, he commented .

The expert defined the poll in the BSP as “meaningful for the start of a new leadership mandate”, as Ninova will understand the mood in the party. He expects the DPS to play a significant role in these elections as well, and regarding the DOST he said: As a sociologist, for now it is difficult for me to grasp them on the radar.
