A future without Cacif – PublicoGT

Mario Rodriguez A.

Yesterday, the Semilla Movement announced the names of the people who will occupy positions in the different ministries of the State. According to its promoters, it is a historic cabinet, because there is parity in its composition.

However, this integration was not to everyone’s liking, including a good part of Bernardo Arévalo’s supporters. The main thing is the inclusion in said cabinet of people linked to the employers’ chambers and former officials who have previously served in government, as well as statements they have given in specific cases of national political life.

Taking advantage of the situation, the networks were filled with ridicule and disappointment, seeing that one of the most coup sectors of the current situation, such as the Novella family of Cementos Progreso, has a significant representation in one of the most important ministries through which it is channeled. public investment in infrastructure.

We must not forget that this family was linked to the dictator Ubico, who granted it the cement monopoly to build public works before being overthrown. With the arrival of Arévalo papa and Árbenz in the democratic spring, that company lost the benefits that Ubico had granted it. And that’s where the hatred towards Arévalo comes from.

The old ghosts of the mercenary invasion that the CIA financed to defeat the government of the Revolution, continue to fuel prejudices and hatred 70 years later, now that the United States tried to avoid the institutional coup that the corrupt pact, through Giammattei and Consuelo Porras carried out.

Beyond the founded and unfounded criticisms against the seed cabinet, the most important thing will be to locate the dimension that Arévalo’s social democratic government will have and its promise to fight against corruption. Given the limited room for maneuver he will have and his already weak ability to manage political times with the opposition, this selection may be understandable.

The truth is that previous governments did not need much time to show their true interests. And in a short time they destroyed the country, with the sole purpose of looting the public coffers. If this practice is abandoned and co-option is reversed, the Arévalo government will have complied, but it cannot ask for patience, nor can it ask for time. If destroying the State was done in a short time, to rebuild what was destroyed, we must begin as soon as possible.

The serious thing about the appointment of ministers was leaving out of the cabinet forces that prevented the coup and maintain resistance to the corrupt pact. In the near future this may mean a gigantic mistake, bigger than the links with the business sector that have now been created and which are the reason for the criticism.

The truth is that A Future Without Cacif cannot be built by a social democratic government. It must be built from below and by those below. We will have to be realistic and pragmatic to demand a social government that provides opportunities to overcome poverty and exclusion, but of course we must not settle for less.

To avoid disappointment, we should not expect radical changes in this government. Which does not imply being complacent, since it is not a blank check that citizens signed in favor of Arévalo in the elections. It is a clear and precise citizen demand so that they comply with the minimum of their electoral program. There is no other.

The fight for a future without Cacif will continue, until the objective is reached, with or without Semilla.
