Satellite connectivity is expected to come to the Apple Watch, in addition to the iPhone, according to information from Mark Gurman. The Bloomberg Reporter suggests even that the availability could be done this year.
Satellite connectivity for the Apple Watch Series 8?
Early rumors had pointed to a satellite connection with the iPhone 13. That didn’t materialize, but new clues suggest it will be for the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Series 7. The idea would be to offer an alternative to Garmin’s inReach Explorer system and that of SPOT.
In February, Globalstar (an Apple partner) said it had reached an agreement to purchase 17 new satellites to power “continuous satellite services” for a customer ” potential “ who had paid him hundreds of millions of dollars. The customer in question has not been publicly named, but as said previously, Apple and Globalstar are partners, which may suggest that the customer is none other than the iPhone maker.
By the way, what would be the use of satellite communication? It could make it possible to contact the emergency services or send short messages to emergency contacts when you are out of range of the mobile network (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G).
A priori, it is rather well on track for the functionality to be present with the iPhone 14. As for the watch, it would be with the Apple Watch Series 8 of 2022 or the Series 9 of 2023. It must be said that the watch is smaller than the phone, which should not help to put the necessary components (in addition to the rest).
