As the city police announced on Friday, a bank employee reported to the operations center shortly before 6 pm on Wednesday night with the suspicion that a customer may have been victimized by fraudsters. An 88-year-old man was driven to the bank in a black car and wanted to withdraw tens of thousands of francs.
At the time of the call, the vehicle and driver were still on site and waiting for the customer.
A patrol car patrol was eventually able to locate and arrest the driver in District 1. The suspect, a 49-year-old Turkish man, was taken to a police station for further investigation. The patrol removed several pieces of jewelry from the car.
A fake accident
According to initial investigations by the city police, the pensioner had previously received a panic call. He was led to believe that his wife had killed another person in a car accident. She could only be released by paying high bail.
The Zurich City Police states in a press release that the police never ask for money over the phone or ask for valuables. If in doubt, you should always call the emergency number 117 early. Even if you have stopped a fraud attempt, you should contact the police.
City police also recommend notifying relatives and acquaintances of these panic calls to deter future fraud attempts. (list)
