A former police officer soon to be mayor of New York?

Eric Adams, an African-American with a twenty-two-year career in the police force, is leading the election that is expected to name the next mayor of New York.

The post of mayor of New York City has a reputation for being one of the toughest in the United States, just after that of President. Who will be the next one? The vote for the democratic municipal primary, from which the next mayor will emerge, is over, but the outcome of the ballot is uncertain.

30,9%

With 30.9% of the vote in favor, Eric Adams leads in the Democratic primary in New York.

Former African-American policeman Eric Adams currently looks set to win. He is in the lead at the end of the first recounts, with 30.9% of the vote, in front of the progressive candidate Maya Wiley (21,6%).

Eric Adams is the current Brooklyn Ward President. His profile appeals to New Yorkers, especially worried about their safety. Shootings up 73% since the start of the year and a series of incidents in the metro have increased the pressure.

Racial insecurity and tensions

Born and raised in New York City, Police Officer Adams fought, during his 22-year career, discriminations that undermine the police. Violence and racial tensions are not the only evils plaguing the city.

New York, which deplores more than 33,000 deaths from the covid, has seen tens of thousands of well-off residents flee and tourists have disappeared.

The economic capital of the United States has recorded more than 33,000 deaths from covid, thousands of stores have closed, and tens of thousands of wealthy residents have fled. Tourists left, Wall Street and Midtown were deserted, and unemployment and homelessness skyrocketed. The task of the next mayor promises to be difficult.

Behind the 60-year-old African-American policeman, the tech entrepreneur born to Taiwanese parents, Andrew Yang (11.6% of the vote), a favorite time of this election, also seems to have been well dropped by Maya Wiley. This one, Black civil rights lawyer and former advisor to outgoing mayor Bill de Blasio, is positioned as an alternative to a security approach. She is supported by the left wing of the Democratic Party, especially by the charismatic elected to Congress Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Kathryn Garcia, former municipal head of cleanliness, is in third position (20.4%) in the current count.

New York City has never been run by a woman. From 1990 to 1993, it had only one African-American mayor, David Dinkins.

The wait can be long

89% of the ballots were counted, it remains to process the votes by correspondence. The results will not be known for several days or even weeks. The new counting system is indeed complex and the counting of ballots sent by mail takes time. The winner of the primary may not be announced until mid-July.

With 86% Democrats among New Yorkers affiliated with a party, the winner of Tuesday’s primary is almost guaranteed to win the general election, held November 2, and of succeed the unpopular Bill de Blasio, in office since 2014.
