A former NY governor and his stepson are attacked during a nighttime walk in Manhattan

NEW YORK (AP) – Former New York Gov. David Paterson and his stepfather suffered minor injuries after being attacked by four men and a woman on a Manhattan street while they were out for a late-night walk, police said Saturday.

The former Democratic governor, 70, and his stepson Anthony Sliwa, 20, were walking down an Upper East Side street around 8:30 p.m. Friday when they were attacked, according to the NYPD and spokesman from Paterson.

Both were treated at a nearby hospital for minor facial injuries and released early Saturday, authorities said.

Paterson, who is blind, also suffered minor physical injuries.

In a statement, police described the attack as a “gang attack” and asked for the public’s help in getting more information about the incident.

Paterson served as governor from 2008 to 2010, after Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned over a prostitution scandal. He was the first black governor in the state.

At a press conference Saturday near the scene of the attack, Paterson said his stepfather was walking the family dog ​​when he got into an altercation with some of the attackers, and told them he would be sent call the police if they don’t stop going. up the street.

Paterson said his stepfather fought off several of the attackers, but ended up with a cut on his face that required several stitches.
