Bradley Tomes broke into the Cumbria Zoo twice in 2018, the prosecutor’s office said. In addition to two penguins, nicknamed Penny and Pablo, he also stole a number of other birds from the area, including herons and parrots.
–
The authorities arrested Thomas after a collector, to whom he sold penguins for 9,000 pounds (273 thousand crowns), contacted veterinarians due to the poor health of both birds. The buyer also reported the incident to the police, despite pleas from Thomas, who promised to return the money.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the convict “showed complete indifference to the condition of the birds, which he stole from his former employer for his own financial gain.”

“He denied the allegations during the police interrogation, but when he was acquainted with the strong evidence against him, he pleaded guilty,” the prosecutor’s office added.
