In the NFL it is not uncommon to see a former player be part of the coaching staff of a team where he played. Experience in a certain position can be valuable in guiding players, especially younger ones. The Cowboys are no strangers to this, and that is evidenced by their recent addition to the coaching staff.
On Monday, it became known that former safety George Teague was invited by the Cowboys to be an assistant to the coaching staff during organized team activities (OTAs). This was reported by Teague himself, during an interview with Mike Fisher on 105.3 The Fan. With his presence, the former player is expected to bring his experience and knowledge to Dallas’ defensive backs.
#Cowboys helper: @Teaguefootball tells us he’s been invited to help assist coaching staff at OTAs. Smart move on a smart guy in Teague. https://t.co/CDMxLL6cjs

Teague had a career of nine seasons (1993-2001) in the NFL, of which he played five with the Cowboys. This happened in two stages: the first of a year in 1996, and the second from 1997 to 2001. Besides, the safety also played for the Packers and the Dolphins.
Some fans may remember George Teague for one act in particular: his famous tackle of 49ers catcher Terrell Owens. This happened in 2000, during a game between Dallas and San Francisco. On that occasion Owens, after scoring a touchdown, went to celebrate by standing over the Dallas logo at Texas Stadium. This was the second time that Owens did this that day, and Teague didn’t want to allow such disrespect to the cowboy team.

In addition to this gesture, George Teague also knew how to contribute to the team with his defensive production. In five seasons with Dallas, the safety set these records: 278 tackles combined, three tackles for turnovers, 15 passes defended, four forced fumbles, one forced fumble, two sacks, seven interceptions and two touchdowns. All in 71 games, 52 of them as a starter.
Another of Teague’s memorable plays with the Cowboys occurred in the 1996 postseason. During a wild-card round game against the Vikings, the safety forced a fumble when a Vikings receiver was about to reach the end zone. This play is reminiscent of what cornerback Trevon Diggs did during the game between Dallas and Seattle last season.
With his addition, even as a guest, the Cowboys add another former professional player as assistant defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Recall that Dallas has on its staff Al Harris, current secondary line coach, who played cornerback for several NFL teams.
As we can see, George Teague is someone who can bring wisdom to the defensive backs of the cowboy team. For now, Teague’s participation will be as a guest only during the OTAs. However, it is not ruled out that the cowboy team may count on him again in the future.
