Strong winds in the area helped the fire spread quickly
A large forest fire broke out near the popular Turkish resort of Marmaris. Because of the strong wind in the area, the flames also engulfed part of a hotel in the small coastal town of Icmeler.
The Turkish Coast Guard secured the bay and stopped water traffic while firefighting planes and helicopters collected water to help put out the fire.

Last summer’s forest fires, most of which occurred near Marmaris, were the largest on record in Turkey. At the time, experts warned that the Mediterranean had become a “hot spot” where the likelihood of fires was high.
