A fisherman recorded the moment his boat passed through an area teeming with black caiman crocodiles in the Amazon. Rainilson Souza, 34, shared several videos on social media and impressed his followers with the presence of the animal.

to G1Souza said the recordings took place in Lago do Rei, close to the city of Careiro da Várzea, 20 kilometers from Manaus. In two videos, he shows several crocodiles on a sandbar that appeared during a local drought.

This species is called Black Caiman and can reach up to 5 meters in length. The animal can weigh up to half a ton.

Rainilson says he’s not usually afraid of passing among the animals in his boat, but he knows the situation is dangerous. “I’ve been going there for a long time. I started going to this lake when I was 12 years old. And during this dry period, crocodiles always appear, regardless of intensity,” he told the portal.

The video, made in early October, caused a stir on social media. The fisherman has a page where he posts records of the Amazon fauna in his area.

Animals of the black caiman species exist only in South America. This species does not generally live in groups, as the fisherman image suggests, and tends to be solitary except during the breeding season.

These crocodiles are considered the top predators of the food chain. This means they can prey on any animal in their habitat, including mountain lions, jaguars, boa constrictors, and anacondas. They typically prey on small animals such as turtles, fish, capybaras, and deer.

Currently, the species is at low risk of extinction and its population is considered stable in Brazil.

dry not amazon

The state of Amazonas is facing a severe drought this year due to illegal burning and low water levels in major rivers. All river channels across the state are in critical condition.

The Rio Negro River and its tributaries are experiencing the worst drought in 120 years, which has drastically changed the landscape of Manaus. All 61 municipalities in Amazonas were affected, and more than 800,000 residents suffered from the drought.
