Plessisvillois Mavrik Bourque and Canada will start the world junior championship by crossing swords with the Czech Republic. The matchup will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. KST at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alta.
Before reporting to the national team, Bourque had a record of 5 goals and 15 assists in 10 games with the Shawinigan Cataractes.
He was limited to ten games due to a shoulder injury. He had played eight games when he fell in action. Initially, there were fears of an extended absence and the possibility that he would miss the World Junior Championship. The injury was ultimately less serious than expected. He was able to play two more games with the Cats before heading to Alberta, where he managed to break through the lineup for Canada.
Thursday, in the only preparatory game for the national team, Mavrik Bourque collected an assist in a 6-4 victory over Russia.
Ahead of Canada’s first official outing to the tournament, Finland will face off against Germany, while Russia will face off against Sweden. After the Canada-Czech Republic duel, still on Sunday, the United States will face Slovakia.
