After last year’s rout, Apple was back at the Golden Globes last night with four nominations. Two for the comedy series Ted Lasso, one for the film On the Rocks and one for the animated film Wolfwalkers. Apple’s streaming service ended up winning a trophy: the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Jason Sudeikis in Ted Lasso. He was competing with Don Cheadle in Black Monday, Nicholas Hoult in The Great, Eugene Levy in Schitt’s Creek and Ramy Youssef in Framework.
Ted Lasso tells the story of an American football coach who finds himself catapulted into coaching a professional English football club when he has no experience in the sport. The series, which was inspired by an advertisement for the England Football Championship by NBC Sports in 2013, was one of the good surprises of Apple TV +.
This 78th edition of the Golden Globes was marked by the omnipresence of Netflix in television productions. It’s a triumph for the series The Crown who won the trophies for Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series (Josh O’Connor), Best Actress in a Drama Series (Emma Corrin) and Best Supporting Actress (Gillian Anderson). It is also the consecration for the miniseries The Lady’s Game (The Queen’s Gambit), with the awards for best mini-series and best actress (Anya Taylor-Joy).
