The British variant of Covid-19 has been detected in Russia. He is a Russian who returned from the United Kingdom, announced Anna Popova, director of the Russian health agency (Rospotrebnadzor).

Russia has registered a first case of the British strain of Covid-19.

“This is the new variant of the coronavirus in a person,” said Anna Popova, director of the Rospotrebnadzor health agency, commenting on Russian television on the results of tests carried out with Russians returning from the United Kingdom.

On January 7, the head of the regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO), Hans Kluge, said the new variant had been detected in 22 European countries.

Meanwhile, the WHO had said at the end of December that the coronavirus would undergo other mutations, qualifying the process as “natural”.

The British strain

The new variant of the coronavirus was discovered in the UK in mid-December. Later, medical authorities said the mutation identified in the country was spreading faster and required even more caution from the public.

Although the new variant is, according to some preliminary estimates, 70% more contagious, there is nothing to suggest at this time that it is more dangerous in terms of mortality or hospitalization.

The new mutation was previously exported to Marseille, the prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône having announced the discovery of an “extended family cluster” in the department. These are people who have been in contact with members of a French family who returned for the holidays from the United Kingdom. Seven new positive cases for this mutation have been identified in the city, announced on January 10 Michèle Rubirola, first deputy mayor of Marseille.
