New York, Mar 24 (EFE) .- The authorities of Rockland County, north of New York, announced this Wednesday that the lifeless body of a firefighter disappeared in a fire declared Tuesday in a nursing home, in the that a resident of the center also died.
The firefighter, a volunteer like the other members of the department in that area, has not been identified for the moment.
His body was recovered early Wednesday, after hours of searching through the charred remains of the building, which collapsed as emergencies responded to the fire, according to local media.
This is the second fatality of this event, after the death of a resident. In addition, just over a dozen people were treated in hospitals, including two firefighters.
According to witnesses, firefighters rescued 20-25 residents of the nursing home from the flames.
The fire, of which the causes are unknown for now, was declared in the early hours of Tuesday and required more than six hours to be extinguished.
Residents who were not hospitalized have been transferred to other facilities in this area, located on the outskirts of New York City.
Nursing homes, such as the one that have been consumed by the flames, have been the most affected by the impact of the pandemic in the state, the hardest hit in the United States.
The vaccination campaign has served to reduce mortality in these centers, which saw the highest death rate from covid-19 and whose data the state governor, Andrew Cuomo, tried to hide.
