Thirteen people, including seven children, have died in a fire at a three-story building in the eastern US city of Philadelphia.
Philadelphia Fire Department Deputy Commissioner Craig Murphy said the number is well-planned, adding that this is the worst fire he has ever seen in 35 years of operation.
The city’s fire department said its officers arrived at the scene in the Fairmount area around 6:40 a.m., and before it could be contained several times it took officers 50 minutes.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said the home on the second floor of the fire is owned by the Philadelphia Housing Authority.
He said this was undoubtedly one of the worst days in the city’s history of losing so many lives in such a tragedy.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the three-story building has been reduced to two buildings.
