According to Lolita Thomsone, the director of the Lipke Memorial, the director of the film Marta Herts, as well as Marħers Westermanis himself, will attend the screening.
The new documentary by director Marta Hertz “We’re just getting started” is a painful and tragic story, but at the same time deeply human and luminous. Its center is the historic Marħers Westermanis, one of Latvia’s few survivors of the Holocaust of World War II.
He says of himself: “At my age, speaking of this topic, I forget all my defects. I think I stayed by chance, not that there is any merit of mine, as in war. I am neither a martyr nor a hero, I am accidentally a cockroach in the light of history, accidentally sprung from that great mill of death.
The film seeks answers to the questions, how is it possible to live a fulfilling life after all that has been endured? Where is the strength when everything dear and dear to a person has been destroyed? Even though it was physically and mentally difficult for him at his respectable age, Marģers Westermanis, together with the filmmakers, visited the former territory of the Riga Ghetto and other places where terrible events once took place, and shared the memories that they haunted all their lives.
As a capacious symbol in the film, the river shot by cinematographer Andrejs Rudzāt serves as a recurring motif throughout the film, according to the filmmakers.
In the museum there will be the opportunity to ask questions of the protagonist and director of the film, Marta Hertz.
Admission to the event is free. The film has English subtitles.
