A few minutes later he had lost 2,500 euros, “they really played on the heartstrings”

It all started with a WhatsApp message that, on the surface, seemed completely innocent. “Hey dad, my phone is broken, and I’m talking to you on a new number, but don’t worry, everything is fine…”, we can read. For Vincent, there was nothing suspicious. “I knew right away that it was my daughter. It’s our code and our way of speaking,” he says. But behind these familiar words, there was actually a scammer.

A well-laid trap

A few exchanges later, the scammer asks Vincent to help him pay an urgent bill. Convinced that it is indeed his daughter, who is in the middle of work on her house, Vincent does not ask any questions. “I knew she had bills to pay. It seemed logical to me.” He then makes a transfer of nearly 2,500 euros without hesitation.
