Due to an unusual smell, an ocean ferry en route from Hamburg Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder was evacuated early Friday. Around 50 passengers had to leave the ferry at the last station on Bubendey-Ufer. According to the police, the evacuation was calm and orderly.

A dpa editor who was on board described the smell as “smoking”. Police initially confirmed the abduction without providing further details.

“We had some smoke developing in the engine room of the harbor ferry. Before the fire brigade arrived, the ferry had already started to evacuate,” said fire department operations manager Sven Barfknecht. According to his assessment, it was a hot V-belt in the t -engine room (dpa/mp).
