It is known that taking vitamins in moderation contributes to the maintenance of a person’s health, but it seems that there are other benefits that we can derive from food supplements related to the prevention of serious diseases, or at least to the reduction of the risk of developing them.
According to the UK’s National Cancer Institute, colon cancer rates have doubled among adults under 50 since the 1990s, but moderate vitamin D intake appears to have a significant association with a lower risk of early colon cancer. , according to verywellhealth.
Vitamin D is a steroid hormone whose main function is to regulate bone metabolism, but with many other physiological functions, such as anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antiangiogenic effects, it is likely to act as a carcinogenesis inhibitor.
A new study published in the Journal of Gastroenterology has revealed that increasing vitamin D levels may help prevent colon cancer in adults under the age of 50.
Researchers from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute discovered the benefits and effect of vitamin D on cancer after analyzing data from 94,205 women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study II. They were particularly interested in finding an association between vitamin D intake and early stage colon cancer, which was diagnosed before age 50.
The researchers confirmed: “Vitamin D reduces the incidence of colon cancer and prevents the formation of tumors in different genetic models of bowel cancer, as it inhibits the growth of cancer cells.”
