The head of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) Markus Söder proposed the president of the Bavarian Farmers’ Association (BBV) Gunther Felsner for a new federal minister of agriculture. Söder confirmed this at a joint press conference. The decision was welcomed by CSU agricultural experts, as Felsner is considered a recognized expert and an experienced partner in negotiations between farmers and politicians nationally and internationally, Agrarheute.com reported.
“The question of agriculture is of particular importance to the CSU and Bavaria,” says Söder. “I suggested Gunter Felsner. We’ve been talking for months.” Therefore, his nomination is a strong signal to the entire middle class of Germany. Felsner will get a spot on the top five list. The CSU wants to win all constituencies. “It will be a tough election campaign and we are ready,” announced Söder.
Felsner said: “I am running because Germany can do better and we have all the skills in our country,” he said. But Felsner’s new political path on the campaign trail also has consequences; he wants to devote himself entirely to the election campaign and announced: “I am giving up my post.” But only after the elections. Until then, he will remain president of BBV. He also doesn’t expect any major farmer demonstrations in the near future. “The purpose of the protests is missing after the government has failed,” he says. Felsner doesn’t see himself as a lobbyist. If he becomes Minister of Agriculture, the first thing he will do is enter into a broad social dialogue.
