The Sierra Leone continues its ambitions in terms of renewable energies and counts on leading allies to meet this challenge. To the COP29 in Baku, Octopus Energyin partnership with British actor and producer Idris Elbaannounced the launch of a wind farm on Sherbro Island in Sierra Leone. This project, which represents an unprecedented investment in the country’s energy sector, aims to remedy low access to electricity and limit dependence on fossil fuels.

The park, scheduled for construction by 2025, will feature up to five wind turbines, complemented by solar panels and battery storage. Located near Bonthemain town of Sherbro, this site should supply approximately 2,000 homes per year in clean energy. This project demonstrates a strong commitment to reduce carbon emissions and strengthen the country’s energy autonomy. By providing reliable and sustainable energy, the park will also help reduce energy costs, with electricity currently coming mainly from expensive and polluting imported diesel.

Known for his activism in favor of development in Africa, Idris Elba plays a crucial role in this project. As an ambassador for the cause, he brings visibility and credibility to the project, while drawing attention to the country’s energy challenges. Its commitment goes beyond a simple image association.
