NEWS – A mother of five children aged 9 to 20, living in Lacolle, needs the help of the population since her spouse is hospitalized, it will soon be two months. A crowdfunding campaign was launched by her best friend, Véronique Chouinard, on the Gofundme platform.
Haleema Rashid, by her nickname “Haly”, is a native of Saint-Rémi. She has lived in Lacolle since 2014. She is the mother of five children, three of whom live with her. Three of her five children have special needs.
Her partner, Carl Lalancette, who suffers from a lung disorder, suffered from pneumothorax, or collapsed lungs, on October 25.
“It was a Sunday afternoon,” says friend Véronique Chouinard, Ms. Rashid’s friend. He was chatting with Haly and he wasn’t feeling well. He was having trouble breathing so he decided to go in the shower hoping the steam would help. Shortly thereafter, he yelled at her to call 9-1-1 and he fell to the ground. “
Haly is so overwhelmed with everything that is going on. She is only trying to focus on her family.

Mr. Lalancette was first declared dead by paramedics, says Ms. Chouinard.
“It was a good twenty minutes in cardio-respiratory arrest, she specifies. He had no more pulse or breathing. They still continued the resuscitation maneuvers to the hospital and he returned. He has since had a tracheostomy and is sedated. He has difficulty communicating. He can say yes or no on the lips or nod. He was intubated for 22 days and is still on a ventilator. ”
He was transported to the Haut-Richelieu Hospital, before being transferred to the Charles-Lemoyne Hospital, where he is still hospitalized.
Work stopping
Ms. Rashid, who is a mental health worker, is on sick leave so she can be at her partner’s bedside. It is the latter’s mother who takes care of the children when Ms. Rashid is in the hospital. She visits him every day of the week, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
For his part, Mr. Lalancette is a refrigeration specialist by trade, but he had already been on sick leave for several months, due to his medical condition.
“If he does, Haly knows very well that he will not be able to return to work,” laments Ms. Chouinard.
Aide
Ms. Chouinard has started a crowdfunding campaign on the gofundme website. Her goal is to raise at least $ 10,000 to support the family. To date, nearly $ 5,000 has been raised.
“They need money to pay current accounts, Hydro, mortgage, insurance and the vehicle,” explains Ms. Chouinard. Food at the hospital is expensive, plus parking and gasoline to get there every day. ”
“It is also possible to offer them gift cards from big-box stores, such as Walmart, where we buy everyday things,” concludes Ms. Chouinard.
