Ammon – A mistake is possible in any case, but to be surprised by the body of a family member again in front of you after his death and cremation, this is a great shock to all relatives, and this is what happened with one of the families in Wales.
A family in Wales cremated the body of a stranger after hospital staff gave them the wrong body.
Health chiefs blamed “human error” at a hospital morgue in south Wales, leaving a grieving family in shock, according to the British Daily Mail.
The body was taken from the mortuary at Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran in south Wales and a funeral service was held at Cerhoe Valley Crematorium.
The Board of Health later discovered this error and had to inform the family of the news.
The family then had to hold a second funeral for their recently deceased relative two weeks later.
The person who was wrongly cremated had no living relatives, according to the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in South Wales.
Nikola Prigodzic, CEO of the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, met the family who had gone through the ordeal of holding two funerals in two weeks.
“We are deeply saddened by what happened to the family and take responsibility for this isolated incident,” she said.
“There are no words we can say, or actions we can take, that can put this right,” she added.
“We are deeply sorry, and our thoughts and full support remain with the family.”
A crematorium spokesman said: “We do not have permission to make any comments without the consent of the families.”
It is known that the cost of the second funeral is borne by the Health Board.
Prigodzic added: “We would also like to reassure the public that this is an exceptional case.
“We identified this error through our own processes and after initial review we are confident that this is due to isolated human error.”
