From 400 meters to the marathon

Cycling and playing sports is the perfect balance in everyday life for Susan Erben. She has been an athlete for many years and is getting closer and closer to her big dream of hers. “I was a decent 400m runner, but when I was in my 30s I turned to cross-country skiing, the first ten kilometers, then the half marathon and then the full marathon. In 2011 and 2012 I ran in Berlin and at one point I saw the NYC marathon on TV. And then I thought to myself, on this big bridge and with 55,000 other athletes, it must be amazing,” the athlete told us in the video.

“It’s been a dream for years”

And that’s how awesome it got last month. The Cottbus woman fulfilled her dream and ran the world’s largest marathon in New York on November 6 this year. After being on the waiting list for three years, she finally had a big trip this year with her son-in-law. Arriving on site, the priority for the athlete was clearly to bring a medal to Lausitz and to enjoy the ride on site. “I can’t even describe these emotions. After all, I had dreamed about it for so long. My friends, my children and my co-workers have all encouraged me and given me money for my 50th birthday so that I could make my dream come true.” the participant said.

The 42.195-kilometer marathon starts at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge ramp on Staten Island and also takes runners through Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx. In the last leg, the men and women run through Central Park. There are numerous bridges and climbs along the way. The Cottbus woman ran a total of 4:33:01 hours and then proudly secured her medal.
