The total foreign trade balance for January – September 2024 is negative and is calculated at BGN 8.8 billion according to NSI data
During the period January – September 2024 from Bulgaria goods worth BGN 63,156.4 million were exported to the EU and third countries, which is 3.6% less compared to the same period of 2023.
During this period, a total of BGN 71,973.3 million worth of goods were imported into the country (at CIF prices), or 0.1% less compared to the same period of 2023.
The total foreign trade balance (amount FOB – import CIF for trade with the EU and third countries) is negative for the period January – September 2024 and is worth BGN 8,816.9 million.
Exports and imports to the EU decreased by 3.4% and by 5.6%
During the specified period of 2024, the export of goods from Bulgaria to the EU decreased by 3.4% compared to the same period of 2023 and was worth BGN 36,269.0 million. Bulgaria’s main trading partners are Germany, Romania, Italy, Greece and France, which form 62.3% of exports to EU member states.
In terms of exports, the largest growth was recorded in the “Mineral fuels, oils and similar products” sector (36.1%). The biggest drop in goods was in the “Food and Live Animals” sector (18%).
The import of goods into Bulgaria from the EU in the period January – August 2024 decreased by 5.6% compared to the same period in 2023 and was worth BGN 36,374.7 million (at CIF prices). The value volume of the goods imported from Germany, Romania, Italy, Greece and the Netherlands is the largest.
In terms of imports, the largest increase was reported in the “Mineral fuels, oils and similar products” sector (42.9%). The largest decline was observed in the sector “Articles classified mainly according to
type of material” (12.3%).
The foreign trade balance (export FOB – import CIF) of Bulgaria with the EU in the 9 months of the year is negative and is worth BGN 105.7 million.
Trading with third parties
During the period January – September 2024, the export of goods from Bulgaria to third countries decreased by 3.5% compared to the same period of 2023 and was worth BGN 22,536.2 million. Bulgaria’s main trading partners are Turkey, the United States of America, Serbia, North Macedonia, the United Kingdom, China and Egypt, which form 51.6% of exports to third countries, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) announced today preliminary data.
In terms of exports, the largest growth was recorded in the “Chemical substances and products” sector (+10.1%), and the largest decrease was in the “Fats, oils and waxes of animal and vegetable origin” sector (37.0%) .
The import of goods into Bulgaria from third countries during the same period increased by 7.5% compared to January – September 2023 and was worth BGN 31,067.5 million (at CIF prices). The largest value volume of goods imported from Turkey, China, Ukraine and Serbia.
The largest increase in imports was recorded in the sector “Unprocessed (raw) materials, unfit for consumption (excluding fuels)” (26.1%), and the most serious decline was observed in the sector “Machines, equipment and vehicles” (6.1 %).
The foreign trade balance (export FOB – import CIF) of Bulgaria with third countries for the period January – September 2024 is negative and amounts to 8,531.3 million.
