The National Council for Tripartite Cooperation will discuss a draft government decree to determine the minimum wage for the country from January 1, 2025. The document stipulates that its amount will be BGN 1,077 instead of the previous BGN 933. The meeting is scheduled for 11 o’clock. There is no consensus between trade unions and employers’ organizations on the proposal.
According to the provisions of the Labor Code, the minimum wage is determined by a special mechanism and is 50% of the average gross wage for the country for a period of 12 months, which includes the last two quarters of the previous year and the first two quarters of the current year. By law, the new minimum wage for the following year is determined by September 1 of the current year.
At an amount of BGN 1,077, it will increase by BGN 144 compared to the current one, which is an increase of 15.4 percent.
The determination of a new, higher amount of the minimum wage is a factor in raising the standard of living of the lowest-income part of the labor market, the report to the draft decree states.
Unions and business, however, are in opposing positions. KNSB supports the government’s proposal, but insists that in the future the minimum wage be tied to the so-called living wage.
The Association of Industrial Capital in Bulgaria announced that the amount of BGN 1,077 is inadequate and does not correspond to the reference values defined in the Directive on minimum wages in the European Union.
The employers’ organization insists that the National Assembly repeal the provisions of the Labor Code, which regulate the mechanism for determining the minimum wage.
