A dozen villages affected after five days of rain

This week’s stormy weather is taking its toll for the fourth time in the municipality of Báguena. The riverbed that runs through the town has flooded for the fourth time this week and the mayor of the municipality, María José Rubio, has asked for extreme caution. “Be very careful with the riverbed, if nothing can be done, let the water pass where it has to pass,” she warns in a message to the residents.

In the rest of the affected areas of the community, the Special Civil Protection Plan for adverse meteorological phenomena (PROCIFEMAR) remains active. The Civil Guard, Firefighters and Civil Protection volunteers are working to resolve incidents. In addition, rail traffic between Calatayud and Embid has been preventively cut off due to the increased flow of the Ribota river.

The same thing has happened with the railway connection between Ferreruela and Villarreal de Huerva, where two passenger trains are stopped, specifically one in Cariñena and another in Caminreal. Adif has already started a bus service to exchange trains and will make the opposite journey to take those affected to their destination. In addition, in Villarreal de Huerva, water has also entered a garage where the Firefighters of the Diputación de Zaragoza are intervening.

Since early afternoon, the rain has caused the Aguallueve river to overflow its banks in the Jiloca region and the pressure of the water in the streets of Báguena continues to increase. Some of the walls of the orchards have collapsed and the blocks of flats at the entrance to the town have been hit even harder. “Having the streets flooded for four days is causing many problems,” says Rubio, who insists on asking residents not to do anything that could put them at risk. The town has been flooded on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and this Monday.

On the other hand, the various emergency services are responding to warnings about heavy rains in other parts of the community, especially in the provinces of Zaragoza and Teruel. In Ateca, a large rise is expected in the Manubles River that will flow into the Jalón. In Romanos, the waters from the storm have reached the garden of the nursing home, although for the moment they have not evacuated the facility. And in the Campo de Daroca region, the discharges have caused damage to the roads of Villarroya del Campo.

The Piedra River could also cause a “difficult” situation as it passes through Cimballa, something that is repeated with the Aguallueve ravine in the town of Anento. In the town, damage has occurred to the pipes that supply the population, as well as to its drains. In Aliaga, the water from the Guadalope River has swept away a vehicle parked in the footbridge parking lot without risk to people. The emergency teams are also responding to alerts in Villahermosa del Campo and in Galve due to damage of varying intensity caused by the water. There has also been a car leaving the road due to pools of water on the A-127, in Sos del Rey Católico.

Firefighters from the Provincial Council of Zaragoza have been carrying out water pumping work since 5.30 pm at the retirement home in the town of Romanos as a result of the heavy rains suffered this afternoon. The Civil Guard is also working on the operation. There have been no incidents with the residents.

On the other hand, work is being done on the signage of the CV 601 Calatayud-Embid de la Ribera road as it has been closed to traffic due to the flooding of the Jalón River.
