A documentary reveals and values ​​the caves of Fuentes de Len

The documentary ‘Cuevas de Fuentes de León’ produced by the Badajoz Provincial Council, through the Digital Transformation and Tourism area, can be seen free of charge on digital Extremaduran television ExTv after its premiere this Thursday.

This audiovisual piece, which aims to publicize and value this natural monument in the province of Badajoz, is part of the series ‘Treasures of Extremadura’, which shows different enclaves of the region in pieces lasting fifteen minutes, with the aim of natural, gastronomic and cultural heritage as a protagonist.

Guided by Marisa Giles, an environmental guard, and Elena Almeida, a guide to the Fuentes de León Caves, the chapter shows different aspects of this karst complex of great geological, archaeological and environmental appeal, declared a Natural Monument in 2001.

Thus, it is explained that in the Postes Cave they have found from Roman vestiges, to dates from the Upper Paleolithic, with a phalanx of a hominid more than 200,000 years old. Human remains from the Neolithic period have also been found there, as it is believed to have been used as a secondary cemetery. In any case, it was never used as a residence but as a place of worship or a sacred place.

The Cueva del Caballo and the Cueva Masero are notable for their geological richness, with formations such as stalactites, stalagmites or veils, all of them very striking. Masero is also the deepest cavity, with visitors descending 50 meters.

The Cueva del Agua is home to a colony of bats and is protected as an LIC zone (Site of Community Importance), ZEC (Special Zone for Nature Conservation) and is within the Natura 2000 Network. It has eight protected species, the colony being largest in the province of Badajoz. It also contains a large underground lake, the largest in Extremadura, with 200 square meters and more than 30 meters deep at some points.

The Fuentes de León Caves can be visited by making an appointment by calling 654 17 48 97, according to the Badajoz Provincial Council in a press release.
