The Latvian Radio House on Doma Square 8, originally built for the needs of the bank, has a room whose special acoustics, sound and spaciousness allow for decades Latvian Radio to make high-quality concert recordings, record music for films such as “Soul Blizzard”, and also record For Latvian popular and rock music performers.
The film’s director Zita Kaminska points out that when studying the history of Latvian Radio, it was surprising that in the beginning music was almost the only content of radio.
“Therefore, today, when so much is said about the need for a concert hall, I think about what would have been the path of music development in Latvia without the first radio studio, which was a creative home for orchestra, choir and pop music ensembles. While the dominant ideology was expressed to the people from other floors of the same building, the first studio “lived its own life” – it produced the first recordings of jazz music, experimental theater performances, high-class symphonic and choral music. I don’t know if we even realize how important it was, ”the director emphasizes.
Orests Silabriedis, the program manager of Latvijas Radio 3 “Klasika”, says: But when Latvian and foreign musicians praise, a new pride awakens. It is clear that this room is a personality in itself, but without people there would be nothing there, so it is a huge pleasure to see the filming from the ancient times found in the Latvian TV archive. It is good that now a wider audience will have the opportunity to find out how much was valuable in the past, as well as to understand how important it will be in this studio in the near and distant future. ”
The more than 200 square meters of space also allows you to record a symphony orchestra together with a choir. The unique sound is appreciated by both Latvian and foreign performers. Previously, this room was the bank’s financial operations hall, but at the end of the 1940s, after the reconstruction of the building, it became the First Studio of Latvian Radio.
The Latvian Television documentary “First Studio” will reveal the moments of success of music stars, the secrets of the studio and will offer unique archive footage with the participation of Jānis Zābers, Leonīds Vīgners, Teodors Kalniņš, Zigfrīds Račiņš. Edgars Račevskis will be with his Radio Choir again, Vasilijs Sinaiskis will remember his most creative time at the stand of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, Raimonds Pauls will admit that Latvian light or stage music was born in this room. Roby Williams, Amy Anderson, Lolita Ritmanis and many others have also got acquainted with the sound possibilities of the first studio.
The LTV documentary was made by director and author of the idea Zita Kaminska, text authors and editors – Orests Silabriedis and Sandra Freiberga. The film was produced on Latvian Television. “First studio” – on April 5 at 18:45 “LTV1” and “REPLAY.lv”, but a longer story about the history of the studio – on the portal “LSM.lv”.
