A doctor has warned against using “moon toothpaste” in an attempt to get brighter teeth, pointing out the negative effects that could come from this.
In a video clip that has been viewed more than 2 million times, the oral health expert told his followers on TikTok via his @rifkindental account that whitening toothpaste “doesn’t whiten your teeth,” as the abrasive ingredients lead to a weaker, yellower. and sensitive teeth. This is because the erosion of the protective tooth enamel leads to the exposure of dentin (the main yellow colored part of the tooth).
Some teeth whitening products use surface stain removers, which whiten teeth by polishing your pearly whites. This can remove color from drinks or food using mild abrasives that “may damage tooth enamel.”
Enamel helps protect teeth from breakage or wear, so not having enough of it can make teeth more susceptible to cavities.
The American Dental Association (ADA) states that toothpaste with a “relative dentin abrasion score (a standard measure of the abrasive effect of toothpaste on dentin and enamel) of less than 250” is safe.
You should consult your dentist before trying a teeth whitening product, as it can cause sensitivity.
